Janigleison Herculano Alves,[1][2] better known as Gleison Tibau (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɡlejˈsõ tʃiˈbaw]; born July 10, 1983 in Mossoró, Brazil) is a Brazilian mixed martial artist. He currently fights for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is one of the largest lightweights in MMA, weighing up to 183 pounds by the time he enters the cage.[3]

He was brought up as a fighter in Kimura team, from the northern part of Brazil. Today Tibau trains at American Top Team. Gleison's biggest strengths are his conditioning, wrestling, size and his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Originally a welterweight, Tibau made his UFC debut against a strong Nick Diaz. Tibau started strong and was taking Diaz down efficiently using his Jiu-Jitsu. In the second round he tired and lost by TKO due to strikes.
After the fight, Tibau took on Jason Dent at UFC 68. Tibau dominated the fight and won by decision. He then took a one fight hiatus from the company and returned defeating Jeff Cox. Tibau then took on undefeated Terry Etim, Tibau won the fight by decision.
Tibau then had back to back losses to Tyson Griffin at UFC 81 and then to Joe Stevenson at UFC 86. He then scored back to back wins over Rich Clementi and Jeremy Stephens.
At the TUF 9 Finale, Tibau fought Melvin Guillard. The fight ended with Tibau losing by split decision. The fight was very controversial as many thought Tibau won the fight.[4]
Tibau's next fight was set to be against former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk at UFC 104. Sherk pulled out of the fight and would be replaced by Josh Neer.Tibau defeated Neer landing a total of 10 takedowns during the fight.[5]
Tibau won his second straight fight, stopping Caol Uno via TKO on March 31, 2010 at UFC Fight Night 21.[6]
Tibau faced Jim Miller on September 15, 2010 at UFC Fight Night 22.[7] He lost the fight via unanimous decision.
Tibau faced Kurt Pellegrino on March 19, 2011 at UFC 128.[8] He won the fight via split decision.
Tibau was expected to face Bart Palaszewski on May 28, 2011 at UFC 130, replacing an injured Cody McKenzie.[9] Palaszewski was also injured and replaced by return UFC veteran Rafaello Oliveira.[10] Tibau defeated Oliveira via via second round rear naked choke to earn Submission of the Night honors.
Tibau won via split decision against Rafael dos Anjos on November 19, 2011 at UFC 139.[11]
